Northcliffe dominate open team events at QLD State Champs

The action continued on day two of the 2021 Queensland Surf Life Saving Championships, with hundreds of competitors battling it out in a range of events across the day. 

Northcliffe asserted their dominance throughout the day claiming multiple podium finishes in the team events.

In the Open Female Surf Teams Georgia Miller, Sara Tazaki, Jamie Perkins and Laura Taylor claimed gold for Northcliffe.

Georgia Miller and Danielle McKenzie then teamed up with Hannah Sculley to win the Open Female Board Relay.

Jamie Roberts joined Miller and McKenzie in the Open Female Ski Relay to claim yet another win for Northcliffe.

In the men’s competition, Northcliffe’s team comprising of Mackenzie Hynard, Sam Norton, Tom Norton claimed gold in the Open Male Ski Relay.

It was a sprint finish in the Open Male Board Relay with Joe Engel, Corey Fletcher and Jy Timperley claiming the win for Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park ahead of Northcliffe’s Matt Bevilacqua, Matt Poole and Cory Taylor who placed second.

Finn Askew, Ali Day, Nathan Gray and TJ Hendy from Surfer’s Paradise claimed gold in the Open Male Surf Teams.

Surf Life Saving Queensland Surf Sports Manager Stuart Hogben said competitors skills were on show throughout the day.

“It has been a great day of racing with the state’s top athletes showcasing their skills across a range of events,” he said.

“We had great conditions for racing throughout the day which saw some close finishes in the team events.

“The athletes will now be focused on their recovery ahead of an epic day of finals racing tomorrow, including the Open Ironman and Ironwoman Final.”

Surf sport greats Karla Gilbert and Ky Hurst will join the commentary team tomorrow for the finals, which will be broadcast on SBS from 2pm AEST.
