Noosa takes out Board Riding Championships

Sunday, 19 January 2020

Sunshine Coast clubs have dominated this year’s Queensland Board Riding Championships, making the most of the local conditions to complete a clean sweep of the podium.

The championships, held over two days at Alexandra Headland, saw more than 150 lifesavers hit the waves and showcase their surfing skills on both long and short boards.

Noosa Heads finished the competition on 102 points to secure top honours ahead of Alexandra Headland (92 points) and Coolum Beach (45 points). Meanwhile, Maroochydore and Kawana Waters rounded out the top five.

SLSQ sports event coordinator Ryan Bennett said it had been an action-packed few days of competition.

“The Board Riding Championships show off a different side of surf lifesaving altogether, and the past few days were a great opportunity for our athletes to get out there, have some fun, and showcase their surfing skills,” he said.

“Our lifesavers obviously have a lot of experience in the ocean, particularly when it comes to reading and managing the surf, which probably gives them an advantage and makes for some really exciting competition.

“We had some good conditions across the two days of action, and the Sunshine Coast clubs were just too strong in the end.

“This was our first state championship event of 2020, and it was a great way to kick off an exciting year of racing ahead,” he said.
