Memorial Day 2021

Friday, 30 April 2021

The official ceremony, which will commence at 10.00am, will feature the presentation of red and yellow patrol caps to new surf lifesavers by Hon Meaghan Scanlon the Minister for the Environment and the Great Barrier Reef and Minister for Science and Youth Affairs.

At the conclusion of the ceremony lifesavers will march with wreaths to the beachfront, and stand facing the ocean, mate beside mate.

Retired Queensland Police Inspector John “Bluey” O’Gorman will say a few words about commitment, respect, courage and mateship prior to the laying of the wreaths.

Wreaths will then be laid at sea by the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service and crews of Inflatable Rescue Boats and Surfboats. Attendees will observe a minute’s silence.
