Drone pilots undertake training on Gold Coast

The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Drones will take to the skies on the Gold Coast today as part of a training course to upskill drone pilots.

The operators from across the region are undertaking a three-day course to allow them to fly larger drones.

Surf Life Saving Queensland Project Manager Drone Operations Jason Argent said the pilots currently operate sub-2kg drones and are being trained to operate sub-7kg drones.

“These pilots have been flying smaller drones, but now they will be able to fly larger drones enhancing our surveillance capabilities,” he said.

“The course includes both practical and theory elements, with the pilots putting their skills to the test on the final day when they demonstrate their flying ability.”

“Successful completion of the course will see them gain their remote pilot licence.”

Drones provide a different perspective and viewpoint, further boosting the level of protection offered by patrols.

“Drones can relay vision with pinpoint accuracy, assisting to spot rips and monitor marine life,” Mr Argent said.

“The additional training will enable us to further the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Drone program and conduct regular surveillance patrols on the Gold Coast.”

Drones are used across various northern Gold Coast beaches throughout the volunteer patrol season.
