Awards of Excellence: Winning Wrap
Surf Life Saving Queensland’s Awards of Excellence has gone virtual in 2020.
Over two action packed nights, the service, passion and dedication of Queensland’s volunteer surf lifesavers and lifeguards was recognised.
Neil John from Sarina Surf Life Saving Club was named Surf Lifesaver of the Year, in recognition of his outstanding leadership as both Club Captain and President.
Neil’s approach and encouraging nature has enabled Sarina SLSC to increase their front-line capability, boost member engagement and strengthen appointments in leadership roles to ensure succession planning for next season.
Coolangatta’s Belinda Doman was named Volunteer of the Year.
Belinda became involved in 1996 as an Under 8 Nipper, 24 years later she was inducted as the first female Life Member of her club and now in her 26th year she has volunteered more than 850 hours keeping beach goers safe.She operates Beach to Boardroom, holding a combination of 13 volunteer positions and leadership roles within her club, a further five at Branch level, and sat on an additional two SLSQ committees over the past season.
Isabella Maloney, from Ayr SLSC, was named U14 Junior Surf Lifesaver of the Year. Maloney is already a Junior Club Captain, assists in weekly Nipper training sessions, completed 23 hours on Water Safety, gained her Surf Rescue Certificate and completed 39.5 patrol hours.
Kirra Surf Life Saving Club were awarded Marsh Club of the Year in recognition of their strong commitment to delivering quality voluntary surf lifesaving, community safety and member services within their community.Their leadership, commitment to governance and sustainability, and ability to harness the talent and capability within their club and local community is inspiring.
Noosa Heads member Lana Rogers was named the prestigious Peter Lacey Athlete of the Year.Rogers has had a stellar season winning the Open Female Long Course Coolangatta Gold and Nutri-Grain Ironwoman Series.
Dave Whimpey, CEO of Surf Life Saving Queensland congratulated all winners and commended them on their service.
“Our volunteer surf lifesavers and lifeguards are the backbone of our organisation and I congratulate all of those nominated and rewarded tonight for going well above and beyond the call of duty,” Whimpey said.
“Although we could not gather to celebrate in person tonight, SLSQ wants all members to feel recognised and thanked for their passion and service throughout the season.”
