2020 Surf Girl Judging Week
Surf Life Saving Queensland’s 2020 Surf Girl ambassadors have converged on the Gold Coast for judging week.
We’ll keep you updated as to what the entrants get up to over the coming days before the 2020 Surf Girl winner is announced on Friday evening at the Surf Girl Awards Dinner.
WEDNESDAY 5 AUGUST 2020
9.00am – COMMUNITY EDUCATION SESSION
The ambassadors had a chilly start to the day diving straight into a Community Education Program at Tallebudgera Creek.
Throughout the session they shared their lifesaving knowledge with community members to ensure they know how to keep safe while swimming at the beach.
They covered everything from what the different coloured flags mean, right through to how to perform a rescue!

12.30pm – VISIT TO STATE OPERATIONS AND COMMUNICATIONS CENTRE
It was time to go behind the scenes and see the State Operations and Communication Centre.
The ambassadors got to take a close up look at the radio network, beach cameras and learn all about how the operators coordinate incidents on our beaches.
There were lots of questions as it was the first time the entrants have been inside the centre.

1.30pm – CPR DEMONSTRATION
The ambassadors showed us just how good their lifesaving skills are.
Each ambassador was put to the test by responding to a mock scenario where a patient was unresponsive.
They each demonstrated their resuscitation skills to the judges by performing CPR on a manikin for one minute.
To finish off the session they got competitive in a CPR race, with one of the judges even getting involved!

3.00pm – VISIT TO SKYPOINT OBSERVATION DECK
After a busy day of judging it was time for the ambassadors to get a bird’s-eye view of the Gold Coast, spending the afternoon at the SkyPoint Observation Deck.
While they were up there they even checked out the lifesaving display.

THURSDAY 6 AUGUST 2020
9.00am – VISIT TO THE WESTPAC LIFESAVER RESCUE HELICOPTER BASE, CARRARA
The Surf Girl ambassadors saw Surf Life Saving Queensland’s “eyes in the sky” up close when they toured the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service base at Carrara.
A highlight for all the ambassadors was seeing Lifesaver 45 and learning about what the crew do on a daily basis.
Cairns SLSC Surf Girl Zara Chauvin-Hartmann even experienced what it is like being winched off the ground.

9.45am – WESTPAC LIFE SAVER RESCUE DRONES
The Surf Girls learned all about Surf Life Saving Queensland’s newest technology – the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Drones.
It was a great opportunity to hear how drones contribute to saving lives on our beaches.
They even got to watch on as it took to the sky!

10:30am – LIFESAVING SKILLS TEST
It was down onto the beach to get wet and show off their lifesaving skills.
The girls working closely as a team to set up a patrol, while the judges watched on closely.
Their skills were put to the test when they had to respond to mock rescues.
Each ambassador excelled in their scenario and showed just how experienced they are in the water.

2.30pm – REHEARSAL TIME
The Surf Girls had their first rehearsal where they had the opportunity to perfect their speeches ahead of the big night tomorrow!
