Athlete DevelopmentA pivotal part of Queensland’s continued success in surf sports is SLSQ’s strong focus on development at grassroots level to ensure a highly skilled set of participants. This season SLSQ has implemented a new athlete development program which allows greater opportunities for surf sports athletes to further develop their skills allowing our members to reach their full potential. Traditionally, Queensland has produced some of the country’s best surf sports athletes and SLSQ is committed to continuing this tradition as well as offering athletes of any ability the opportunity to perform at their best. Regional Athlete Development Clinics A number of regional athlete development clinics are held each season across the state to cater to up-and-coming surf sports competitors. The clinics provide participants with access to professional athletes and coaches and also act as a talent identification tool. SLSQ High Performance Squad The State High Performance Squad was developed to cultivate a group of the state’s most promising surf sports athletes. Selected from the previous seasons’ results, the squad comprises of eight athletes aged U-19 (four male and four female), 16 atheltes aged U-17 (eight male and eight female) and 16 athletes aged U-15 (eight male and eight female). The State High Performance Squad are also provided with access to quality training through clinics and a camp to allow participants to further excel within surf sports. The Queensland Cyclones is the state representative team and is selected towards the end of each year to represent Queensland in the Interstate Championships. The 2011 Queensland Cyclones Team will consist of 36 members including eight under-15, eight under-17 and ten open athletes as well as an open male and open female boat crew. This team will be selected later this year and will compete at the 2011 Interstate Championships in Sydney in both ocean and pool events.
