In 2010 Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) introduced advanced camera technology at selected beaches across Queensland to provide additional surveillance and an extra set of eyes at identified ‘black-spots’ along the coastline.
The CoastalCOMS technology allows for 24-hour, round the clock, surveillance of high-risk areas and provides lifesavers with access to a live-stream of information on surf conditions, wave height and beach usage.
The cameras have been strategically positioned to monitor activity on the beach, both in and out of the flagged areas, and enable greater response times to any emergency search and rescue situations that may arise.
Importantly, the camera network also provides SLSQ with an invaluable opportunity to review footage and assess the performance of surf lifesavers during peak periods, patrols and rescues as part of our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement across all areas of operations.
